From the very beginning it’s clear that All Good Children is a challenging read, compelling and well-written enough to be worth it. The horror here is more of a science fictional nature than a fantasy one, with brutal, cruel aliens taking over the earth and allowing humanity to keep on more or less as usual but on terrible terms, especially when it comes to their children. The book is post-apocalyptic in an original way, or at least it seems so to me, although I haven’t read much in that genre past The Hunger Games. The human characters are believable and sympathetic, especially the rebellious teenage girl, but the others have just as much depth and agency. It’s that contrast of everyday reality with the nightmare reality hovering over it that gives the story its grim intensity. There is struggle, secret resistance, and heroism, and the ending is both uncompromising and successful. This is the author’s second book, and so impressive that now I’m going to read her first one, Eat Your Heart Out, even though I’m not generally drawn to zombie stories.Product details

I had no idea what to expect when I started this novel. The horror/apocalyptic genre isn’t something I normally read, and this was my first encounter with queer fiction. I was pleasantly surprised on all fronts. The story line was very engaging although it had a bit of a rough start. Even though there was some foreshadowing, Ingram managed to take the story in places I didn’t expect it. The ending was satisfying enough in itself, but also was set up nicely for a sequel.
The most challenging aspect of the book is its voice. Because we see the story through the eyes of three different characters, it can be somewhat disjointed. With that being said, two of the three of these characters are developed extremely well. The pain of all three women was palpable.
Ingram did a few things stylistically that I felt were brilliant. She left out specific technological or cultural references that would clue us in to exactly when this novel takes place. She advances through time flawlessly even though she has to manage first person present tense with three characters. And she tackles messy issues within the story line.
I’m a new fan and look forward to reading any new work.
One of my favorite things about this book was the characterization, specifically with the mom. In a lot of dystopias, parents just watch as their children are taken away to die, and it feels false. Most parents wouldn't put up with that. In this book, the mother has her own story arc, exploring her emotional trauma and attempts to help her children. You experience her feelings of hopelessness, which makes Jordan's story that much scarier. Her mom is doing everything in her power to save her and it's terrifying to consider that it might not be enough. Jordan's character is well-developed as well. She feels like a real person, definitely not a Mary-Sue. Her character arc ties into the plot arc perfectly. This is a fascinating read, and I couldn't put it down. Definitely one of the better things I've read in a while.
It's been well over a year since I found a book I couldn't put down. This is it. I read it cover to cover in a single afternoon. The story imagines a dystopian world in which creatures have over taken the human race. This leads to teens being potentially selected for camps. We know the camps are places of horror, though the reasons become clear only later in the book.
A percocious young woman seeks to buck the oppressive environment she's in, only to find herself sent to the camps, where she is offered the choice to save the world at her own expense.
I don't want to give away too many details, but I truly enjoyed the story and I highly recommend the book.
I read this book on the suggestion of another reviewer, and I have to thank her. Had I skipped this one, I would have missed a seriously good piece of fiction.
The description of the book doesn't give you a clue that what you're about to read is an edgy, timely, and sharp science fiction novel. The book is extremely creepy and the description of the Over and the terrible things they do are outstanding.
Above all, I loved Jordan. She was such a rebellious kid.
There were a few world building issues. I didn't understand everything the Over did and why. I also didn't understand some of the things that happened at the camp. But over all, I really enjoyed the book and would like to read the author again.
I might know the author but I very much enjoyed reading this book. I am very happy to see queer fiction becoming more popular and available. I love teenage angst issues and thought Jordan was an awesome character. I would have liked the entire book to be written from her perspective. Also, since I'm a guy and I love fantasy and science fiction novels, I would like to have learned more about the world and the Over. Omalis was a great character as well and I would like to read more about her background. Great story and it keep me entertained!
